tales of whales and constellation fascinations.
Wow, did you know that a Blue Whale's tongue weighs about 2.7 tonnes? They're the largest mammal ever known, and can measure up to 33 metres in length! Despite the huge size of it's mouth, the dimensions of it's throat only allows it to swallow objects narrower than a beach ball.
Maybe this next piece offat oops, fact would provide some comfort for all scale-tippers out there: Blue Whale calves gain weight very quickly, up to as much as 90kg every 24 hours! *gasp*
When it comes to courtship, Humpback Whales and human beings do not differ much. Groups of two to twenty whales would gather around a single female and exhibit all sorts of behaviour to establish dominance, such as breaching, spy-hopping, lob-tailing, tail-slapping, flipper-slapping, charging and parrying. Each would try their luck in gaining the attention and affections of the female, and when a male is unsuccessful in its attempt, it backs off. Now, some human males don't get that. =P (Please note that I am not targeting anyone in particular. Just referring to guys in general. Stop being so sensitive!)
Most of you are familiar with whale song, from watching Finding Nemo. Most of you can even speak better whale than our gigantic, fatty friends. But did you know that whales within an area sing the same song? All Humpback Whales of the North Atlantic sing a same song, and all those of the North Pacific sing another. And they have a constantly evolving music scene like we do. Each population's songs changes over a period of years, and they never return to the same sequence of notes.
(somebody get me off Wikipedia now!)
Sadly, due to whaling activities, Humpback Whales now only number from about 30 000 - 60 000 compared to the earlier recorded 125 000.
Someone please buy a plane ticket for this wanderlust soul. So many things to see in the world, and today, I feel like whale-watching.
Did you know that an albino Humpback has been discovered in the east coastal waters of Australia? It's been named Migaloo - "white fellow" in one of the Aboriginal Australian languages. When I own a dog, I'll have 3 names to choose from - Mr Delicious Brocolli (Ollie), Migaloo (Miggy?! Maggie...) and Humphrey.
Now Humphrey is the name of a famous Humpback that became famous after it got rescued on two occasions when it wandered off into San Francisco Bay.
Aren't whales such amazing creatures? There's so much in the world to see, and every new discovery just amazes us at how great and wise and detailed and incomprehensible God is. Especially when you consider the vastness of the universe. The beauty of the stars on a clear, still night.
Which led me to perform a search on "constellations", and now I want to star-gaze and learn more about the different constellations. And the different stories and myths that follow.
It's amazing how the stars look so close to each other, but are actually light years apart. That our very own sun, a star itself, is miniscule compared to the others out there in the sky. And to think that these massive giants become as tiny specks of dust when set against the vast universe! If imagining such magnitude leaves you breathless, try comprehending the God who created the heavens and the universe! And yet He loves me enough pay the price for my sins.
His grace is sufficient for me.
